June 24, 2005 | Elisabeth Bumiller
Welcome back to the BuzzFlash.com GOP Hypocrite of the Week. If you ever wonder how a president so low in the polls can manage to survive, it's because of White House stenographers like Elisabeth Bumiller of the New York Times. Bumiller likes to inform readers of what is on Bush's I-Pod and what books he allegedly reads, but not of the confirmed fact that he is a chronic liar. Bumiller thinks it would be unseemly to call Bush a liar, as she recounted last year while on a media panel: "You can't just say the president is lying. You don't just say that...You can't say the president is lying -- that's a judgment call." When a reporter can't call an elected official a liar, that's not reporting; that's hypocrisy. The New York Times didn't have any compunction about wallowing in the pornographic details leaked to them by the merry elves of Ken Starr's inquisition. But if they see a president lying America into war, their White House correspondent believes it is disrespectful to let the American public in on the truth. The media watchdog site The Daily Howler calls Bumiller's weekly "White House Letter," "propaganda so stupid and crude that it would have embarrassed the Chinese Commies... Of course, like any competent flack for Mao, Bumiller airbrushes every episode which might distract from Dear Leader's goodness." We were recently reading a book about the oppressive Orwellian regime in Burma. A school teacher complained to the author that Burmese students are frightened to honestly answer questions because, "It has come to the stage where they see a thing which is not true and they dare not say it is not true." Elizabeth Bumiller must have studied journalism in Burma. Until next week, remember our motto at BuzzFlash.com: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time. Catch up with you soon. |
