July 1, 2005 | Karl Rove
Welcome back to the BuzzFlash.com GOP Hypocrite of the Week. If a surgeon's primary tool is a scalpel, the primary tool of a demagogue is creating demons and scapegoats. The most fundamental hypocrisy of the demagogue is claiming divine virtue while using tactics that are base, vile and utterly dishonest. Karl Rove knows his craft well, and like Goebbels, thinks that he is employing manipulation of the masses in the name of a higher calling. But there is no pedestal of morality for Rove to stand upon; he is proof that while absolute power may corrupt absolutely, an absolutely ethically corrupt person can corrupt power. So it is no surprise that as Bush's numbers sink into the gutter, Rove trots out the kind of scapegoating rhetoric familiar to those who demonize opponents in order to consolidate their own rule. That is why last week he claimed that liberals '"saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers." Hitler claimed Jews were not "true" Germans. The Turks said Armenians "polluted" Turkey. Osama bin Laden says that Americans are "infidels." Karl Rove insinuates that liberals are not "true" Americans. If you don't take the comparisons seriously, then remember that the Jews in Germany didn't either, at first. Hypocrisy on a small scale can be harmless. But the kind of morally corrupt demagoguery practiced by Karl Rove is not. It's the kind of hypocrisy that can lead to nightmares that become real. Just wait until he launches another diversion and we see a bi-partisan "rallying around our leader" to implement martial law. Rove knows exactly what he's doing, so did Goebbels. It's not a comparison we take or make lightly. Until next week, remember our motto at BuzzFlash.com: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time. Catch up with you soon. |
