July 22, 2005 | George W. Bush
Welcome back to the BuzzFlash.com GOP Hypocrite of the Week. When you select a GOP Hypocrite of the week and Bushevism is the ruling political force, you run the risk of sounding redundant. At BuzzFlash, we try to highlight the full range of GOP hypocrites, including your average "family values" adulterers, gay-hating gay congressmen, and anti-abortion sodomists -- to name a few. But we keep coming back to the titular head of the Grand Hypocrisy Party, George W. Bush. The Eddie Haskell of Republican politics just doesn't give us a break. Can't he be honest for one week? One day? Last week, he astonished pundits by narrowing the requirements under which he would fire Karl Rove to, and we're paraphrasing: "If he is convicted of leaking and receives the death penalty, I will terminate his employment in the White House only after he is executed." Well, the biggest public con in American history is that Bush's power depends upon his credibility, even though he has run the most dishonest, secretive and amoral White House in memory. The reason he allowed Rove and others to betray America's national security was to keep future whistleblowers from revealing the truth about Bushevism: it's built upon a foundation of lies. The good news? Americans appear to be catching on, despite the mainstream media filter that generally treats Bush as if he's an honest man. The bad news? According to a July "poll taken by the Pew Research Center, 49 percent, said they [still] believe the president is trustworthy." So half of America still trusts the man who put their lives at risk to ensure his own power base. That's mighty scary. But that's democracy. If there are enough Jim Jones' followers who condone the hypocrisy of a tightly-leashed frat boy in $2000 suits, the majority rules. As for the BuzzFlash staff, we're keeping our fingers on the door handle in the event Bush drives this democracy car over a cliff. We just hope he hasn't done it already. Until next week, remember our motto at BuzzFlash.com: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time. Catch up with you soon. |
