August 12, 2005 | Donald Rumsfeld
A triple honoree (1st and 2nd) as BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week, Donald Rumsfeld is either delusional or a pathological liar. But we'll argue, he's really both. He has entered a realm of such bizarre and contradictory statements that we truly believe he may be in the mid-stages of dementia. He's also branching out into an otherworldly "public celebration" of the macabre mode that gets you hoping someone will spirit him away in the night so that he can receive the psychiatric medical attention he so sorely needs. Recent news reports reveal that "The Pentagon will hold a massive march and country music concert to mark the fourth anniversary of 9/11, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said in an unusual announcement tucked into an Iraq war briefing." Now you are probably correct in complaining to BuzzFlash that this is not an indication of Rummy's hypocrisy -- and that he has now actually transitioned into the lunacy stage. And that may be true. But there's nothing to say that he can't be both a hypocrite and a lunatic. After all this is a guy who says that we may leave Iraq soon, then says that he never said that and we'll be there a long time, then says that all the insurgents are ex-Saddam supporters, then says that Al-Qaeda is leading the insurgency, then says that we may be pulling out soon when the Iraqi Army is trained, then says that we may be there for years, then says that he never said it would be a short war, then says that the war is winding down, then says the insurgents are Nazis and will keep on fighting indefinitely. Well, you get the picture. The Pentagon stenographer corps just keeps recording Rumsfeld's contradictions and maniacal statements as if he were a fountain of wisdom. Hey this is the guy who sagely intoned, "There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things we know we don't know. But, there are also unknown unknowns. These are things we don't know we don't know." The Defense Department reporters interpreted that as wisdom. But even though he's clearly crossed through the Looking Glass, we still can't forgive him his chronic hypocrisy and lying. After all, he's the guy in charge of our soldiers who are doing the real dying, while Donald gets to perform his daily tap dance of madness and prevarication, without any accountability whatsoever. That's enough to merit him his third recognition as the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week. After all, it's hard to feel sympathy for him. There's real blood on his hands. |
