August 18, 2006 | SEND TO A FRIEND George Allen
The Republicans are so determined to hide their inherent bigotry that they are resorting to foreign languages now. That's what Uber-Republican George Allen did when he publicly race-baited an American of Indian descent. He called a volunteer for James Webb, his Democratic Virginia Senate opponent, a "Macaca." Allen was quickly forced to issue one of those non-apology apologies that Republicans specialize in. But that's where it gets real interesting. Allen claimed he didn't know what the word meant and he just stumbled, Bush-like, upon some unknown linguistic phrase. Of course, Allen, it appears, was lying. His mother is of French-Tunisian descent and spoke French to him when Allen was growing up. "Macaca" it turns out is a French-Tunisian derogatory word for people with dark skin, as in people of non-European descent. Suffice it to say, it's akin to the French slang for America's "N" word. The odds that Allen just happened to pronounce such a word accidentally, without knowing its meaning, are slim to none. Apparently, you can take the bigotry out of the official GOP Party propaganda, but you can't take the bigotry out of the Party or George Allen. Until next week, remember our motto: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time. Catch up with you soon. * * *
