October 4, 2006 | SEND TO A FRIEND | GET EARLY NOTICE OF THE HOTW Mark Foley
It almost seems redundant to name Mark Foley the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week, but posterity demands it of us. Foley isn't just one of your typical gay Republican hypocrites who supports a president and party with an anti-gay agenda. Those guys are a dime a dozen. No, Foley outdid the run of the mill GOP sexual hypocrite -- gay or heterosexual. The guy is finally bounced for talking dirty and apparently trying to seduce teenage House "pages" on the Internet. That might be a federal crime. And if it is a crime, it is because Foley sponsored and championed the bill that made Internet stalking of young people for sexual purposes subject to prosecution. To top it off, so to speak, the Republican leadership in the House was proud to have Foley chair the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus. Talk about putting the child predator in charge of the teen dormitory! Apparently the House leadership had been tipped off for sometime about Foley's sexual interests in male pages, but did nothing. The Deputy Republican Whip's interest in teen male pages was widely known among the pages themselves, but Dennis Hastert and John Shimkus, head of the House Committee that oversees the pages, both didn't lift a finger to stop Foley from interacting with his sexual prey. If the GOP House leadership doesn't care to protect young people from an Internet sexual predator, it's hard to see how they can claim to be interested in making us safe as a nation. Their only real interest appeared to be maintaining Foley's Congressional seat, not in the young people who are entrusted to them. In that sense, Foley shares his BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week Award with the entire Republican leadership in Congress. They let America's parents and young people down for craven political gain. That's not only hypocrisy; it's aiding and abetting a crime. Foley should know that. He sponsored the legislation that made it one. Remember our motto: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time. Catch up with you soon. * * * This is the first HOTW for Mark Foley. |
