So Many Republican Hypocrites, So Little Time

December 5, 2008 | SEND TO A FRIEND | GET EARLY NOTICE OF THE HOTW

Saxby Chambliss

Welcome back to the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

You can't keep a bad man down when it comes to Republican Southern politics, and so Saxby "Chickenhawk" Chambliss will return to the U.S. Senate after defeating Democratic Vietnam War Veteran Jim Martin.

Chambliss was a coward who got out of the Vietnam War by claiming a football injury prevented him from serving. In 2002, he ran a savagely dishonest campaign against triple Vietnam War amputee Max Cleland, running ads where Cleland's face morphed into Osama bin Laden's.

Southern Republicans love to elect tin soldiers who look strong and brave and love war, as long as other people are fighting it for them. And many of the voters who re-elected Chambliss may be more loyal to the notions of the Confederacy than to America.

In fact, in 2007, we "honored" Chambliss as the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week, noting that he yearned for the days of Stonewall Jackson when he stated in the Senate Armed Services Committee: "We need better intelligence. If we had better intelligence in the Civil War, we'd be quoting Jefferson Davis, not Lincoln."

As BuzzFlash noted then, "Since the Republican subtext for its campaigns over the past 40 years has been race, it's not surprising to hear a Georgia cracker in the Senate yearn -- Trent Lott style -- for the days of the Confederacy."

The odd thing about Southern Republicans is that they love playing soldier and wearing American flag pins and all, but their coded language usually signifies a higher loyalty to the days of plantations and mint juleps than to the American Constitution.

Chambliss had Sarah Palin campaigning for him in the final days of the runoff, a politician who has embraced the ideals of the secessionist Alaskan Independence Party.

We guess Chambliss and Palin are two peas in the GOP hypocrisy pod.

Chambliss better enjoy it while he can. The last holdouts in Dixie are starting to fade off into the sunset.

But on Tuesday, December 2, hypocrisy made a triumphant last stand in the Peach State.

Remember our motto: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time.

Catch up with you soon.
